Week 50 of 1995
Dear Ms. Allison; As I viewed the million man march on the boob tube,I began to notice that I was unable to see any American flags! Was this do in part to the news media or a flag shortage? Paytar

Did you see the "75 Reasons Women Should Not HaveThe Right To Free Speech" My daughter who teacheslaw at another school sent it to me. She was livid to say the least and wondered about my reaction. I'mnot certain what to think (except disgusting) so a brief response from someone like yourself wouldbe welcomed......
Signed, alkingYeah, yeah, yeah.
Greetings, from yet another one of those young,(24 years old), single, white males. My only question to you (and perhaps you aren'treally the best person to answer this?) is:Why aren't women (on the average) more willing totake the steps necessary to advance their equalityon their own? I see so many "feminist leaders" andavid followers ranting on and on about the problemof too many white males in all the power positions, yet when you corner these people one on one andask them questions about their knowledge ofcomputers and technology, they're most likelynot at all interested!Echos of this are also seen in other "minoritygroups" such as blacks and hispanics. More of thesewhile males seem to have taken an interest in theareas of science and technology - which directlyrelate to success in the 90's. As they say inthe advertisments for the lottery, "You can't winif you don't play!"

I thought I had seen a reference to an integrated collection of seach engines and tools in the pages of HotWired. Unfortunately my kids got hold of the computer and I haven't been able to find the article or URL. Can you help me to find such a tool. Thanks Robertroberts@inforamp.net

What a load of superficial, narrow crap is spoken here. Since I started on the Net just a short time ago, I have seen very little comment of any depth or real value. God almighty, surely you don't still think that women are an oppressed minority. The world has turned quite a few degrees since the 70's you know. Is all this supersilious nonsense necessary to sell to the tabloid masses?
Signed, KenI haven't answered this question, but you can.
While my school, The University of Michigan, and I assume other colleges as well, are getting a more proportional female enrollment in engineering in general, they are still behind in computer and electrical. Why are women turned off to these fields? Is it social or cultural programming and stereotypes?
Signed, gears@umich.eduYeah, yeah, yeah.
Dear allison, My friend is becoming an e-stalker, i.e.he checks homepages and constantly fingersthe people he's attracted to. How should I tellhim this is bad?

Dear Allison,I don't know who else to ask this so I'm asking you.How do I find a lost love via the internet? A private investigator costs too much and with the information I have it would only take a few secondsto find him if you had the computer capabilitieswhich I do not. I desperately need to find this person. I need closure. My marriage is in bad shapeand I need to talk to this person so I know whetherhe truly is the one for me or if he is still just abig asshole. I've been looking for years and don'tknow what else to do!!!! HELP!!!! Thanks

dear allison, what do you do when you hate your girlfriend, and desperately desire to cheat on her, but you can't bring your self to break up with her because she hasn't done anything to deserve it? what my real question is how do you find girls that are willing to overlook the fact that you're taken?
Signed, mr dumboYeah, yeah, yeah.
As a woman in 20th century America, you've been shaving for a bit longer than (most) guys. What's your favorite remedy for razor burn? Do you like styptic pencils and other aluminum sulfate products,or is there a preventive that renders thoseobsolete?

Your reference to Cicely, Alaska, as I assume you know if you read any of the article, is filmed in Washington. None of the situations are realistic in this show. Cicely, Alaska is supposed to be about 3 hours south of Fairbanks. In the program, Daylight in the winter was completely shut out. This is pure falacy, however, since the shortest day in Fairbanks is 3.5 hours. The location of Cicely would make their shortest day of the year around 4.5 hours. This is just one example of the lack of fact involved in the show. The men to women ratio in Alaska varies, but averages at 3:1. Here is a situation where women deffinitley have an advantage over men. Not all guys are going to have a girlfriend, so the women get to pick. There it is not an advantage to be a nice guy because you'll get shit on. The average waitressing job in Alaska doesn't pay well, but tips average the wages to about $10 per hour (in a larger town). You really ought to go visit. The winters are quite harsh, but you can't have everything.
Signed, Whatever you want, you'll do it any way.BFD, pal, maybe somebody else cares.
Wow, you really put that guy (robertsj) through the shredder.Have *you* ever been discriminated for being a woman?(And I don't mean all the little things, albeit they aren't so 'little' and do add up...)

Dear Allison, why are some Hotwired employees so rude? I recently submitted a drink recipe to Cocktail and received this responce:"just as guns abd alcohol don't mix, coke and cigars don't either. Try anew mixer if you can find anything in your bomb shelter that isn'tpreserved for the nest 100 years." I guess a Gramm 96 in my sig warranted this?Doesn't Wired have sensitivity training?
Signed, HotWired Subscriber Since '94Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Hello Allison. So what's the best kind of music to listen to while webbing? Myself, I have all sorts of tastes, but for some reason when I put on Satchmo or Billie Holliday I get this creeping feeling of condemnationcoming over my pate from those wonderful old farts of yesteryear. Gershwin seems to be just fine with my cyberpassions, however. Tori Amos, Sarah McLachlan, The Gipsy Kings, and Lyle Lovett all seem to handlemy long hours at the computer equally well.I've tried later Joni Mitchell stuff and it doesn't work half as well as "Blue." : )PS - your attitude about men is very similar to my own - let's see if we can't impress the world with this concept... starting with our mothers...

Dear Allison,I am torn.I'd like to be filthy richso I can afford all these neat new toys. However, I am not good enough as an engineerto make it big, and the obvious alternative career path is blocked because of the usual extreme loathingthat engineers reserve only for managers. What should I do?

Clearly people often fall into ill-fated cases ofamorous attraction for people with whom things willjust never happen. But what about deeper affection? Will true love always win out? Or can it too gounrequited?

Why is it, that when so little of the net is actually relevant toto technophiles, that they seem to dominate all discussions, justifying everything with Technobabble, and decrying all critics as 'enemies of futurism'?In the UK, there is a well known beer advert that features a smiley face saying "hey man - get wired!" -the actors answer - "get a life" - unfortunately, I amalmost inclined to agree.

Dear Allison,What ever the problem is with unbalanced relation problems between man and women is the ego sense(what ones feals inside about it's ego being evaluated, estimated, approved, researched, wanted, etc. etc.)the source of all evils?

When did people get the idea that nouns like `access' are legitimate verbs? I am a rabid and enthusiastic netfreak, but I also am a writer and I deplore the abominable grammarwhich flourishes on the Net in all sorts of forums. What's an old fashioned thinking personsupposed to do? Knuckle under and tolerate what Iknow is wrong? I might as well give up writing :(

Allison, some brilliant souls in the Cocktail section suggested that HotWired should hold reallife Cocktail parties, a la Dewar's, in various places across the US. And these brilliant soulssuggested that you host them! I think it is an excellent idea! Go for it! I don't have a questionfor you, but I just thought I'd mention it.Look at the Threads section of Cocktail formore info...
