Then

There wasn't anything good
on at the movies,
so we sat pathetically on the couch,
giggling too readily,
shifting position much too often
while we watched a rented film.

At the video store,
half drunk, I'd not paid attention
to the movie you picked,
wandered the isles
smiling like I had a special secret,
I had no intention
of watching the whole damn thing.
That was back when you liked me,
way back when I thought about love.

Free beers, and a rented flick.
God, I was a cheap date.
But even that
don't make a damn bit of difference

Now.
