Tioga Pass
A Real Vacation entailed long drives down countless highways throughout the northwestern United States. Small towns, big towns, but mostly small towns. And never hotels, though diners were a favorite.
At this point we were still driving along in an old Ford station wagon biege with wood panelling on the side. It even had one of those seats you could put in the "back-back." That was the coolest. But cooler still was when my brother and I were allowed to lie in the empty back part and play steamroller. That didn't happen often, so usually we were forced to play games with our feet, in the back seat.
Behind the station wagon came the trusty travel trailer. (Later we got a motor home, but this was still in the early days... And earlier still we only had a tent, but back to the trailer...) Once belonging to my Grandparents, it was a former vehicle of the "Totem Travel Trailer Club." COOL. We pulled it behind us all over to places like Tioga Pass. I liked camping when I was little... It meant I didn't have to take a bath.
